Atlanta to Tampa/Odessa

The trip is coming full circle now, I'm in Ginger's guest room where we started two weeks ago.  We decided last night that we needed to leave at ten thirty, so there is plenty of time this morning for a leisurely breakfast and more talking - like we haven't talked non-stop for the last two weeks!  I realize that I don't have many pictures of Ginger's quilts and they deserve better treatment that that!










And it's my birthday.  Ginger wasn't supposed to get me anything but she's forgiven when I see this magnificent dragon hand-painted on silk!


We're taking David with us to the airport, so we go to Ben and Elizabeth's to pick him up.  I'm glad because that gives me a chance to really say, "Good-bye" to them both.  I guess Ginger will have him for the afternoon.

There are some interesting things to see at the Atlanta airport!






Looks like we'll be leaving on time!!  And this time there's a bit of cabin service.  Coffee, tea, or water? Chips or biscotti? Much better than the flight up!!!




And we're down!  Betsy is there to meet me and my suitcase arrives and we go up to the car.  When we get to her house Betsy has prepared dinner for me and hands me a cooler!  She knew my fridge would be empty!

There's rain all around but none of it falls on me!!

At home my best-ever neighbor, Megan has left me a birthday surprise, too!  The cats are happy to see me and I have time to unpack and put everything away, except, of course, the suitcaseful of dirty clothes! I need to have the house in order because the termite guy is coming tomorrow.

I crash early and get up early the next day.  There's yoga class and laundry to start and mail to collect and groceries to buy.  Turns out there's also laundry to hang up because the dryer has decided it's going to give up the ghost.  Luckily there's no rain and the porch is really hot!  In the mail there are more birthday cards and there are virtual ones, too, in my email and texts.  What a lovely way to celebrate! And what a marvelous trip!!

 Wednesday, August 21, 2024 The Museum doesn't open until eleven o'clock and the Inn offers a continental breakfast, so we're taking advantage of that! It's a relaxed morning and a contrast to the hustle bustle of NYC! The continental breakfast includes delicious pastries and hard-boiled eggs and bananas and a small citrus fruit that looks like a calamondin but isn't and coffee and tea.  And, more interestingly, it includes a stimulating conversation with the woman who runs the inn.  She isn't Heidi, because that was the original owner, and we've taken to calling her Not-Heidi! Oh my goodness!  Ginger has found her favorite food in the whole world! When other people want chocolate birthday cake, Ginger wants rhubarb pie!! She suggests that we go have a look at the Mexican restaurant that is right up the hill and when we do Ginger strikes up a conversation in Spanish with the owner.  She is a remarkable artist and shows us photos of some of her work on her ph...

Roanoke to Atlanta

Wednesday, August 28, 2024 It's the home stretch!  The breakfast buffet at the Sleep Inn includes fresh make-it-yourself waffles with banana-nut batter and eggs and sausage as well as all the usual dry offerings like cereal and oatmeal, and four kinds of juice and so forth.  We take our time and finally move everything back into the car.  One can't come to Roanoke with visiting the Roanoke Star!  And so we do!  What a magnificent view of the city and all the mountains that surround it!  There is a young father there with his two-year old twin girls!  We chat for a while before the girls get too antsy and we have to leave, too, if we want to get home tonight!  I'm told that it's even cooler at night when the star is lit! We pass a road called Puppy Love! Isn't that precious? Potsdam to Belvidere

Monday, August 26, 2024 Oh, it was such a great night last night and now we have to pack our tents and steal away.Ben, Elizabeth, and David have to leave for the airport at nine;  but we can get on the road as early as we're able. We get a chance to say good-bye to them and to our spectacular hostess, Kristina, and to Isaac and Ella who have entertained us royally.  Ella even offers to help carry suitcases downstairs! We stop out front for one last photo of this great old house and Janet yells good-bye from her bedroom window.  She is still under the weather and it is such a shame.  No hugging allowed there!  Covid is still nothing to fool with. Ginger stops for gas and to get something for breakfast at the Hyde Mobil at Tupper Lake.  We wind up sharing and egg-salad sandwich and half a tube of Pringles - don't say a word!! We could have been so much worse! We are needing to stretch our legs and maybe find a cute little shop.  We stop at Steamboat Land...
