Out in the Country; Is this the Hundred-Acre Wood?

 Thursday, August 22, 2024

I might be the first person up, so I'll hustle in and out of the bathroom before adding photos to yesterday's blog entry!  It's a little chilly up in our room and it made for good snuggling under the covers last night! There was talk of a beautiful walk today, when the kids were planning adventures last night. They are taking a serious hike tomorrow and I want no part of that one!  There's an 1800 foot elevation change and this flatlander won't be able to breathe!

The morning is so relaxed!  It's great!  People come and go, some have coffee or left-over pizza.  I make a cup of tea and clean up my backlog of emails.  And it's all to the accompaniment of Elliot practicing the cello.  I really miss music in my house.  Everyone in this family is musical and there are instruments everywhere - drums and a piano and a keyboard guitars and lots of brass!

The bad news is that Janet has tested positive for Covid.  We'll just have to see how people feel three days from now.  She'll stay in her room and the house is so big that even yesterday we weren't really close to her for very long.  I hope that all the vitamins I take will prove helpful!

The lady from the Hammond Museum has written Ginger.  Our choices are to pick up the print on the 25th after three or for her to wrap it up and leave it in a safe place for us to pick up at our convenience on the 26th.  That's a much better choice for us and actually works out better since we won't be tied to a particular time!

Aww!  Gus!
Such a gorgeous yard!  I think there are about a hundred acres!

There had been lots of talk about a walk and Elizabeth finally pushes everyone to get their act together. David has gone down for a nap and Ginger volunteers to stay with him, so there are eight of us who take two cars and drive into Potsdam.  It's a really cute little town and since there are actually two universities here, it has whatever you might want!

Quilt squares on the side of the hardware store!

We are going to walk along the bank of the Raquette River and it was "advertised" as a forty minute walk. "'Taint so, Magee" but it is a delightful walk with lots and lots of nature to be seen.

And we're off!

The leaves are just starting to turn!

We made a new friend!

There comes a point when we can walk further or head back.  Five go on with the walk and Ben, Elizabeth and I go back home.  Ben doesn't want to leave Ginger along any longer than necessary.

Home again, home again!  Everyone is hanging out outside since the weather is now so pleasant!  Elizabeth is making a chocolate cake for Alex's birthday dinner tonight and it is so sad that his mom, Janet, won't be able to participate.  She doesn't want to move any further from her bed than the bathroom.

There's some down time before dinner prep gets underway.  Then the boys go to the butcher's shop for steak and rib-eyes and Ginger puts together a salad from the contents of the fridge.  And there are two other sides that are left. With the corn that the guys are bringing there will be quite a feast!

Ella has been out walking and apparently she called Isaac to come pick her up.  There is a neighbor down the street with two large German shepherd-type dogs that are corralled by an invisible fence. Except that one of them loves Ella and has risked being shocked to try to follow her home.  The plan was for Isaac to pick her up and fool the dog.  It doesn't work!  He follows her home and comes bounding into the yard, and it's obvious that he is still a puppy, even though he's the size of a full-grown shepherd.  He is non-stop motion but as sweet as he can be.

This is Kristina's house!

The piano bar is brought up to the patio for tonight.

And spruced up

Elizabeth's cake is ready!

Ben will grill and Isaac and Alex will pan sear.

Elliot tickles the ivories in his new "do".

Janet is feeling a bit better!

Poor baby!

The kids call him Loki although his owners think he is Percy.

The sun is setting.

Getting real!

Delicious!!

Between the dog and the mosquitos, people decide to eat inside.  If we were eating outside Janet could join us at a distance, since she is feeling better.  As it turns out, the kids all eat outside and Kristina, Ginger and I eat inside with David and Elizabeth.  But they finish quickly and go outside so Janet is part of her son's birthday dinner after all.  When we're done, we go outside, too, just in time for the spectacular cake that Elizabeth made - topped with a strawberry lobster!

Happy Birthday sounds so much better with musical accompaniment!

The boys clean up the kitchen!  And there is a shifting conversational circle before some of us are ready for bed.  Actually, I think all the ladies pack it in while the guys stay up playing something! Tomorrow they are going on what sounds to me like a grueling hike.  I don't know what the rest of us will do.  That's tomorrow's problem.
