Last Day in Potsdam

 Sunday, August 25, 2024

Whatever we want to see and do, today's the day to do it! I went to bed so early last night that I can get up and write the whole entry, with photos, for yesterday's adventure before anyone else is even awake.  Well, I did hear David briefly, but I think even he went back to sleep!

There's a bit of discussion and it is agreed that a trip to a park with a lake ad beach is what some of us need.  Kristian knows a spot and she leads Ben, Elizabeth, David, Ginger, and me to a spot a short car ride away.  The water is. too cold for this Florida girl, but the others get about thigh deep.  Even Ben decides that a swim out to the floating dock isn't worth it, especially since you can't use the ladder.

After the novelty of building sand castles and burying feet wears off we're ready to head home and see what other mischief we can get in to.  We stop at the grocery store to get lunch makings but in the parking lot we decide that will take too long if we want to do anything in the afternoon. There's talk of a girls' outing and we head home to drop off the guys and let the swimmers change out of their suits. Then Kristina, Ginger, Elizabeth and I head north to Saranac Lake.  Ben and David are headed for long naps!

We really didn't run him off the road!

So much corn!

It's about an hour and a half drive and we're really ready for lunch when we arrive.  Kristina had said that there was probably a brewery and a quick search leads us to Bitters and Bones.  We can sit outside on the second floor and that's perfect.  They have local drafts and interesting cocktails and a broad selection of food.  It takes a while to get our drinks, partly because our waiter hears "mezcal" as "Moscow" so the bartender has to come over and ask how to make a Moscow margarita! I have a strawberry wheat beer called "Sweet Afterlife" although the Irish stout called "Green Bones" looks good too. Elizabeth has the "Wildflower" and the "Garden Party", both pretty complicated concoctions! And we do eat, not just imbibe!

By the time we've finished most of the shops have closed, since it's Sunday, but we do find one really cute one and the owner is a cutie - too honest to be a shopkeeper.  She tels Ginger not to buy the peach jelly, becase it's not local and she gives me a special bag that should go with a more expensive item.

On the way home we take a spin though Paul Smith College.  It's a school for forestry and the culinary arts. It's a large campus with lots of trees - as you'd expect!!

Further on Kristina asks if we want to see an eagle's nest.  Well, yes!!

Can you see it?

We make the trek home and along the way the guys tell us that they're making hamburgers and brats for dinner with asparagus and sweet-potato fries!  Score!

Dinner is lovely with Ben at the grill and Ella in charge of the fries.

After dinner people drift into the living room and an impronptu concert commences.  What a marvelous treat!  Eliot is at the piano and Isaac sings, joined for a duet by Ella.  And toward the end Kristina joins Eliot in a piece for four hands.  And they're not just talented but funny!!  Laughed 'til my cheeks hurt! What a splendid way to end this marvelous interlude.  We'll leave in the morning with happy memories and a return invitation.  (And I'll always remember "I don't think we did that piece justice!" and "Just Google it! and eliot's eyebrows!)
