Whiteface Mountain and rhubarb pie!

 Friday, August 23, 2024

Another morning without an alarm.  So nice! The younger generation is going on a murderous hike (They don't think so!!) but Elizabeth isn't feeling well, so she's staying home.  Kristina, Ginger, and I will take David with us.

These aren't all the instruments in the house!

Before we go Ginger brings down to show everyone photos of her Guernica quilt, since they have a print of the painting upstairs! They are duly impressed!!

Both cars leave at about the same time and we're off to see Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid.  It's about an hour and a half drive which is mostly two-lane roads with towering trees on both sides.  David is a real trouper and either watches the scenery or zones out.  He's a really good car tripper.

This is the second deer that has tried to commit suicide-by-car this morning!!

When we get to the entrance to the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway, which goes up to the summit, we check the entrance fees.  In case you're considering it, it's $20 for the car and a driver, $20 for the second person, and $10 for each other person.  Luckily they don't charge for little people!

Those pretty yellow flowers hide some evil beasties!

The plan calls for driving up to the end of the road and coming around and back down.  At that point you take the first parking space you find on either side of the road.  Since there's no telling how far we might walk from the parking space, Ginger drops the three of us off and goes to park.  David is less than thrilled that Grandma has left him;  but she's back really quickly!  The parking goddess was smiling today!

David wasn't haven't this!

This is where you drive in and right back out the other side.

We first go into the gift shop to see how much their sweatshirts are. I think I might be cold at the top since the wind is blowing and it's already chilly.  I won't be cold enough to pay that kind of money for a sweatshirt!

We go back down the stairs and outside.  The lady at the eentrance had said that the elevator wa broken but it was only a fifth of a mile walk. She neglected to say that it was all stone stairs. David took one look at the stairs and said, "Backpack"!  Ginger has brought the backpack that Ben uses when they all go hiking and among the three of us we manage to get Ginger fitted up and David installed. We get to the first lookout point and it is breathtaking.  And, also, as far as we want to go.  I'm so impressed that Ginger made it this far!  And I have no need to go any higher!  This view is plenty good enough for me!

We make it back down the stairs with no mishaps and take David out of his device before walking back o the car,  From here we're going to Lake Placid to see the cute little town and get some lunch. Kristina says there's a pub and brewery and that sounds perfect.  It's pretty easy to find the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery and we even get brave and park in the Hampton Inn lot next door.

We're seated outside and the weather is perfect for it. We have a beer flight with the three beers that we all had originally thought we'd order and the local brew, Udu.  The others are South Meadow Maple Porter, Boysen the Hood, and 46'er Pale Ale.  After sampling them all, we each pretty much stick with our original choices, except that I've had enough with the samples and don't need to order any more!

The food is good, too!  I have the Butler's Chicken Sando whifch is a little spicy and comes on a potato roll.  It stands about four inches high!! David is so good.l. He is walking around  and investigating everything;  but he never goes more than a few feet from our table and he's finally decided I'm okay because he comes to me for cuddles.

We're ready to drive through Lake Placid and head for home.  For a bit we drive on the route that the Olympic torch took when the Winter Games were here and we can see some of the venues!

We get home and regroup for a bit before Ginger and I head to the grocery store.  David will stay with Kristina which looked like it might be a problem;; but when we get home she says he was fine after just a couple of minutes!  Whew!

We're making tacos and rhubarb pie.  Well, Ginger is!  I'm just the sous chef;  I cut up lettuce and left-over steak and green peppers for her salsa and put things in bowls.  Just about the time we've got things ready the kids come home.  It's 7:30!  The tacos are delicious and well-received and the pie and ice cream are out of this world!

Everyone has had a long day and once we all agree to leaving tomorrow morning around nine for Montreal, people drift off to shower and bed.
